WSSR Schedule

This is the schedule I've put together for our volunteers.  They are: Ken, Heidi, Holly, Gail and Catherine.
The formatting is a bit messed up  but you can see the gist of it.  The highlighted days are the days we have everyone at the rehearsal   ( except I don't have data from Catherine yet) and so we are doing all of the 5 songs on these days.  On the days where only a subset of volunteers is present, we are doing the two most challenging songs and one other.   It might be that I  more rehearsals scheduled for the volunteers than needed, but we can always cancel .  It's much harder to add in.

Update re WSSR  Invite  :  This coming Monday  Sept 23 is the day that the congregation is invited to  come sing WSSR with us.  I've posted it,  published it, etc.  I will make calls to  people who have mentioned an interest to remind them.  However,    I will still be in Michigan next Sunday and can't talk with  folks on Sunday.   I  need you to talk it up also.

I wish I  had taken time to talk about this last night-- but o well.  I'm realizing that I'm feeling  a bit " stingy"  with what songs to give up to  others because I loved last year so much.   I am working hard to give up the past and live in the present. This is, as S Clay said, a new era.   I need to firmly come down on the side of Share the Music!   Maybe some of you are feeling this too so I wanted to put  it on the table for discussion.

I"m finalizing what songs to " offer".    It will depend in part on who comes.  Please comment:
      1.   Round  and Round:  some say not, but  how else would they get      in??     I envision them processing in and sitting on edges of rows where they can easily join us but return to their seats again.

        2.  We are a Circle
     3.     Wings  MAYBE   It's not too hard but need to sound etherial    ( or is this my hate to give it up voice talking?)
    4.     This Little Light
     5.     Imani
    6.     We’ve got the Power
     7.     Carry it Home

Here is a copy of the invitation.  I've written to the following people and  pasted this in the email:  Linda Law, Gail Brownlee,  Ken Marsh  Marty Bynum, Heidi Campbell.  If you can think of anyone else,  please  write to them.   I"m going to write to Scott Templeton this morning.

You've been interested in the Winter Solstice Singing Ritual-- so I wanted to be sure you are aware of this opportunity to be involved in  it without having to give over your life to it!

Winter Solstice Singing Ritual    2013

If you attended last year’s Solstice event you know how magical and healing it was.  We are doing it again and want to include more people in the choir, women and men, youth and adults.
Come share the wonderful spirit and community.
How will this work:
·      Come to one rehearsal on Mon September 23 at  5: 30   in the sanctuary and sing along with She Sings.  If you decide you want to participate in one or more of the songs, we will give you a score and a cd that you can practice with.

·      We will rehearse these songs for several Sundays in a row at noon

·      Attend dress rehearsal on Fri.   night Dec 20

·       Attend the Winter Solstice night Sat. Dec 21.

What you do NOT have to do:
·      Sing anything you don’t want to
·      Sing really hard music
·      Be able to read music or have a GREAT voice
·      Sing a solo

Call Elaine Fredendall  650 6824  or talk with anyone in She Sings if you have any questions.

Family Tree Sept 15 2013

I just sent everyone Family  Tree.  I can't figure out how to post it here.

Try this link     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZLb2aN4A44&feature=em-share_video_user

This is for  Sept 15 which is a intergen.  service  The words are very " wordy"  so
I'm thinking the verses will be solos and all on chorus,  even congregation.   There are hand gestures too!    I sent them to Theresa to see if  she wants to teach the kids.

Please consider if you'd like to do a verse and claim one.     I just ordered the songbook so we'll have it  by our next rehearsal.

Family Tree
by John Forster & Tom Chapin
© 1988 Limousine Music Co. & The Last Music Co. (ASCAP)

Before the days of Jello
Lived a prehistoric fellow,
Who loved a maid and courted her
Beneath the banyan tree.
And they had lots of children.
And their children all had children.
And they kept on having children
Until one of them had me!
We're a family and we're a tree.
Our roots go deep down in history
From my great-great-granddaddy reaching up to me,
We're a green and growing family tree.
My grandpa came from Russia;
My grandma came from Prussia;
They met in Nova Scotia,
Had my dad in Tennessee.
Then they moved to Yokohama
Where Daddy met my Mama.
Her dad's from Alabama and her mom's part Cherokee.
We're a family and we're a tree.
Our roots go deep down in history
From my great-great-granddaddy reaching up to me,
We're a green and growing family tree.
Well one fine day I may go
To Tierra Del Fuego.
Perhaps I'll meet my wife there
And we'll move to Timbuktu.
And our kid will be bilingual,
And though she may stay single,
She could, of course, comingle with the
King of Kathmandu.
'Cause we're a family and we're a tree.
Our roots go deep down in history
From my great-great-granddaddy reaching up to me,
We're a green and growing family tree.
The folks in Madagascar
Aren't the same as in Alaskar;
They got different foods, different moods
And different colored skin.
You may have a different name,
But underneath we're much the same;
You're probably my cousin and the whole world is our kin.
We're a family and we're a tree.
Our roots go deep down in history
From my great-great-grandmother reaching up to me,
We're a green and growing family tree.
We're a green and growing family.

Music for Meditation

The UUMN  morning email includes a review of a meditation service they did at their conference last week.  This one especially spoke to me-- it's calming but not depressing---   see if this link works:http://www.anahermusic.com/01%20kosi%20r'vaya.mp3

The words they are saying  Kosi R'vaya", often translated as "My cup runneth over.  I was thinking of doing this after the kids collect the cans-- always a frenetic time---- after they leave-- as a way of bringing us back to a calm space.

Here's the score!!!:

I'll see if Susan  Watson can print  some for us!!!

When Choirs Sing Many Hearts Beat as One

Saw this on the UUmusicians network just now and thought  you all might find it interesting.  I haven't even READ it  yet...  hmmn  the link doesn't seem  to be alive-----  out of time to figure it out

notes from rehearsal 7/8

In attendance: Elaine, Sara, Susan Cl.

Susan Ch. unfortunately had to step down from the song plans for Eve's 7/21 service but as always we are so lucky to have so many talented people, and especially the scheduling gods were smiling on us b/c Sara is able to step in and it is coming together pretty well tho we are glad we have another whole week plus a Monday for prep.

That is my run-on sentence for the day.

Some upcoming stuff from Elaine's recent meeting with Terre:

  • on 9/15 we will sing "We're Family and We're a Tree" by Tom Chapin
  • the much-awaited All Sing has been scheduled for 10/6
    • we will probably rehearse on the Sundays 9/22 and 9/26, possibly before service or possibly just after
    • Elaine will ask for people to write if they're interested and then do a doodle
    • the All Sing will be mixed gender and mixed age
    • we will sing "All God's Children Got a Place in the Choir" which has some fun stuff for kids to jump in with

Wow it occurred to us this evening that we are in a time of Extreme Transition for so many of She Sings' members: some positive things and some negative and some in-between but all Big and reality-bending.

Here's to courage and patience for all those who are dealing with Life Tectonics in one way or another. If you don't have any challenges on your horizon at the moment, send some vibes to the others.

Notes from "rehearsal" 7/1 - revisited

(Sorry for the repeat email - I'm making it do the notifications again because of the orange/bolded clarification.)

The quotes are because it was more chatting and wine-ing than rehearsing but still rates a post.

In attendance were:
2 Susans
1 Elaine
honorable mention: Sara

Elaine and I apologize that neither of us got around either
  • to confirming what was on the blog last time (there indeed will be no rehearsals/services for the month of July***
  • or to spreading the word that at the last minute Sunday she and Susan and I decided it would be fun to meet at my house for wine and song Monday in lieu of normal rehearsal.

Anyway. Subsequent to the no-She-Sings-July decision we were asked to sing for Eve Stevens' service on 7/21. Long story short, what we're working on --for anyone interested and available, no pressure-- is "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)" which Josh Groban made known (see vid at bottom). Eve's service is to be --if I understand correctly, Elaine please correct/specify-- roughly kind of a big "All Will Be Well" message so we were looking for something uplifting/encourage-y.

We didn't think of simply doing "All Will Be Well" I think mostly due to lacking Heather's guitar contribution, but also we'd probably need more prep for it to sound comparable to how we did before voice-wise, too, since there are so many of us who are unable to take part these days.

Anyway I will send out an email with the pdf for the song above if you would like to access it. (Please don't tell the copyright gods - feel free to go purchase your own if you prefer at musicnotes.com in F maj.)

So far with Elaine's guidance and accompaniment Susan and I are kind of doing with it what we did with "He ain't heavy" but others are welcome to join us as long as you can come to all rehearsals between now and then. This will not be able to be a jump-in-at-the-last-minute piece and the fewer the voices the more stuck we will be arrangement-wise so if you come we will be counting on you for both rehearsals and for the service itself.

***Ergo, there is still no rehearsal in July except for this piece/service. So if you cannot make both of the next rehearsals and the service, there is indeed no She Sings stuff for you to worry about this month.

Here's the Josh Groban song:

We are doing it a good bit faster and changing the multi-voice/fadeout stuff at the end (still in progress). Verse 1 solo Clay, verse 2 solo Chandler... still working out harmonies for the refrain.

Elaine and Susan please remind me if there was something else to announce - seems like there was but it escapes me.

I guess it's movie song time

One good post deserves another... I watched "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" last night - fairly good but perhaps the best part is this song from the wondrous (as always) Glen Hansard...

New Resource for Music

Just found this

http://acappellacentral.com.au/resourceindex

while looking  for the score to Gabriella's Song which is from the movie As it Is in Heaven.  Here
is  a you tube link to the song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxmgkxRrpZE

I think it would be great.  The subtitles are on the screen.

Gabriella's Song

It is now that my life is mine
I’ve got this short time on earth
And my longing has brought me here
All I lacked and all I gained
And yet it’s the way that I chose
My trust was far beyond words
That has shown me a little bit
Of the heaven I’ve never found
I want to feel I’m alive
All my living days
I will live as I desire
I want to feel I’m alive
Knowing I was good enough
I have never lost who I was
I have only left it sleeping
Maybe I never had a choice
Just the will to stay alive
All I want is to be happy being who I am
To be strong and to be free
To see day arise from night
I am here and my life is only mine
And the heaven I thought was there
I’ll discover it there somewhere
I want to feel that I’ve lived my life

notes from rehearsal 6/24

Attendance: Elaine and sclay

We went thru the two pieces for Sunday (Imago Dei and May I be Filled). We figured out versions for (we think)  every combo of attendance we might be able to hope for from the group. Indeed, if no one comes but Elaine and myself, we are ready altho it would of course be better to have others with us.

Reminder for "May I be Filled"

  • if 3 or more people, progression will be -
    • verse 1 all on soprano
    • verse 2 divide between sop and alto
    • verse 3 sop and alto and tenor

  • if 2 people, progression will be -
    • verse 1 soprano
    • verse 2 alto and tenor
    • verse 3 sop and alto

Reminder for "Imago Dei"

  • if 3 or more people - one person per solo
  • if 2 people, I will solo verses 1 and 3 and Elaine will solo verse 2

We then brainstormed about possible pieces for Eve Stevens' service on 7/21:

  • #1057 turquoise hymnal "Go lifted up" (need piano and at least one voice)
  • introit "We are gathered" (need at least three voices and it has to be people who've practiced the piece)
  • #1043 "Székely áldás" (need piano and at least two voices - preferably familiar with piece)
  • #1020 "Woyaya" (need at least 3 voices, preferably familiar with piece)

Elaine will poll everyone b/c obviously we cannot do this service unless enough people are able to come rehearse at least once and on the same night and then commit to attending service that day.

Notes from rehearsal 6/17

Plans for "May I Be Filled" (turquoise hymnal #1031)

This is a change from what we talked about before since we won't have flute after all.

1st time thru - unison
2nd time thru - soprano and alto
3rd time thru - soprano, alto, and tenor

soprano: Susan Ch. (probably) and_______________
alto: Elaine and ___________________________
tenor: Susan Cl and __________________________

The "and___________'s" are dependent on how many come on 6/30 when we are to sing this.

We went thru "Imago Dei" a few times too. No change from plan posted a couple of weeks ago.

We also worked on another thing to add to the repertoire, "Be Thou With Us" turquoise hymnal #1039
This is really pretty and really short - another nice introit or benediction to have on the list.

Reminders:
We're not singing 6/23
We are singing 6/30

We're thinking about taking July off entirely - rehearsals and services, due to vacations and other conflicting plans everyone has. Will discuss further next week. If you aren't going to attend rehearsal next week and have any strong feelings about this please email Elaine.
