Choir notes 6/12/17

Sherri feel better! Jay hope you got lots done!

Present:
Elaine, Scott J., Sara S., Sarah Mc., Susan

Upcoming probable dates:
Aug. 20 - Out of the Stars - eclipse
Sept. 17 - Dance Alleluia
Cum Sancto Spiritu  - also in September - TBA
The idea was dancing around, too, to do "Cum Sancto" as a small group piece sometime during the summer.

Tim McGraw song requested by Terre - We took a listen - Elaine is getting music...

Elaine Faithful doing service about trees. July 9 - looks like only Scott J, Elaine and Susan C... we're open to ideas…

UPDATE:  We are not singing July 9.  Due to our rehearsal calendar— we would only have 1  day to rehearse and so I  told her we were unable to do it.

We went over: This is my home (the Sibelius hymn), Cum Sancto Spiritu, Dance Alleluia, Out of the Stars.

!!!!!!!!!*****
Next week we will do folder-clean-out! Please bring any and all old music so we can turn in to Elaine.

uh oh - notes from 4/24

uh oh bc I'm so late
Elaine jinxed me by saying what a good job I'd been doing re the blog. doh!

at least we're not singing this week - I'd like to think I would have been on time with this if we were.

anyway...
in no particular order...

  • Cory will be here Monday 5/1 to rehearse "Why Walk When You Can Fly" with Sherri, Sara S., and Susan
  • everyone (I believe) got on the doodle poll and let Elaine know the dates they will not be here over the summer - as far as they know so far... - if you haven't done the doodle or let Elaine know your availability please do so
  • Paula learned some fun new warmups during her music retreat at The Mountain which we used Monday
  • Rehearsed:
    • Boyce "Alleluia" - we had shelved this but dusted it off now - to keep handy for whenever it might work - no specific service in mind
    • Sibelius "Finlandia" grey hymnal #159 - but it's called something else in the hymnal
      • I think that is for Riley's service? I did not note :(
      • anyway... Scott has an interesting story about the origins of the piece which he will tell while one or all of us hum in the background
      • then all sing both verses - parts:
        • Sop: Paula and Sherri
        • Alto: Sara S and Susan
        • Tenor: Sarah M and Scott
        • Bass: Jay
  • we aren't singing tomorrow but anyone who is attending, we prepped hymn #51 (grey hymnal) bc it's slightly challenging - may need to help lead the congregation
bye

rehearsal notes 4/17/17

Present:
Elaine
Sherri
Sara S.
Sarah M.
Jay
Susan

For Riley's memorial (May 7, 2pm, at UUFC):

  • Choir:
    • Why Walk When You Can Fly - Sherri solo, Susan and Sara S. backup, Cory piano
    • I Know This Rose Will Open - (grey hymnal 396) - Susan, Sherri, Sara, Jay - once unison, 3x round - sing in order of names for the round - SOFT! we might play with some dynamics and get stronger in the middle round part, we'll see next week
    • Woyaya (we didn't rehearse this but I'm guessing we'll plan to do it same as we did it recently for service?)
  • Hymns will be How can I keep from singing and Rising Green, maybe a third? I feel like I missed writing one down...

For this coming Sunday 4/23:
  • Keep on the Sunny Side
    • Solos for verses:
      • Sara S. verse 1
      • Sarah M. 2
      • Susan 3
    • Elaine and Scott join everyone for chorus - harmonizing OK!
    • Chorus 2x at end - some talk of repeating the final line again slowly for effect, Grand Ol' Opry style...
    • Paula on piano
  • Please meet at UUFC at 10am for rehearsal/warmup
We are not singing Sunday 4/30

Scott T. has let Elaine know he will have time to sing over the summer (Yay)! There is the possibility at least of some duos, etc. as the summer evolves... Please try to think of your summer plans and have any pertinent absence dates handy next week at rehearsal.

Just a thought: tho the Gcal is public, not that many people access it - Elaine do you want to have people's summer dates on there? Then if anyone has changes they can either just edit their own dates or let me or Sherri know and we can do it for them, but you'd always have the most accurate dates to reference... juste une idée... If so I can input everyone at or after rehearsal next week...

rehearsal notes 4/10/17

Rehearsed:

  • Breaths (for this coming Sunday 4/16 - EASTER) -
    • altos be alert to tendency to go flat
    • everyone watch Elaine for final za-ah
    • Elaine will give notes, then boys have 4 measures of bum-bums before the rest start in
    • we will be sans Sara S. :(
    • please meet in sanctuary at 10h for pre-service rehearsal
  • Keep on the Sunny Side (for Sunday 4/23)
    • latest idea: verses will be in solos, chorus all together
    • I think we decided to do the last chorus twice
    • for now solos are: verse 1 Sara S., verse 2 Sarah M. (I might have those two switched in my head?), verse 3 Susan
    • harmonize on chorus as/if you like
    • we will be sans Murphy-Jacobses :(
We are not singing 4/30

Please note that Easter breakfast is at 9:30 Sunday.

rehearsal notes 4/3/17--FEEL BETTER SHERRI!!!!!

Singing this next Sunday. I'm actually up to date on the gcal currently. Crazy!

Please come at 9h45 with your voices already warmed up in the car so we can try to polish "All Will Be Well" which is still slightly rough, and so we can pick up on "Woyaya" which is in pretty good shape.

Some tidbits you may or may not already have:

  • "Woyaya" (blue hymnal #1020)
    • we're doing just two times each on the two repeated sections
    • no ritard at the end
    • Renée and Jorge are joining us on this (drum and guitar, respectively)
    • beginning will be slightly different:
      • boys will start their bom-bom's as normal - two bars
      • then instruments join in - two more bars (well really 1.5)
      • then rest of the voices
    • Sara Summers will be on S2 if no Sherri and will do harmony where poss.
  • "All Will Be Well"
    • Jorge is doing guitar on this now so that Sara S. can sing S2
    • try to aim for feeling now: prayerful, pleading etc
    • on the "and so"'s for the final chorus, let S2 do them alone
Please chime in on the group email if you think of anything I've forgotten - or feel free to add them in the blog comments - they will still get emailed to everyone either way.

Revised schedule as of 3/27 per Elaine

One of these days I'll be back on track putting actual rehearsal notes on here in a timely manner - meanwhile it's good Elaine provides easily copy-able info so I can make it _look_ like I'm not totally dropping the ball... ahem... even tho my actual rehearsal notes are at home and I have every intention of posting them... ahem again. Probably need to start bringing my computer to rehearsal again - that's when I seem to do best blog and gcal-wise...

  • "Put a Little Love"
  • blue hymnal #1051 "We Are..."

Sunday April 2

  • blue hymnal 1022 (I can't remem title now!) - we're doing as the choir piece
  • be ready too please to help congregation with blue hymnal 1021 (OK now I'm blanking on that too)

  • maybe still doing "Alleluia"

Happy Tuesday!

update/s....

From Elaine - I think certain things are new so I'm posting the whole thing again.
Please let Elaine know re your availability on these dates ASAP.

I do know from subsequent emails, etc., that we are doing "All Will Be Well" for Dillman's service on 4/9.

Here's a link to the Meg Barnhouse version - lyrics are slightly different than in our sheet music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Kadbd3tCqc

We're hoping Scott Templeton can join us for "Put a little love/Love Train" on 3/26.

I'm adding any rehearsal notes I can think of at the bottom; I've been a bad girl about those lately - sorry! If I miss anything please don't hesitate to write the group or write me and I can edit this blogpost if that's better...

<<
1.We have been asked to sing the following dates. Please let me know if you are NOT available.

March 19  Ed Proux   I told Ed I'm not sure we have time  for this
Topic: How we Talk to People
Ed is asking for Keb ‘Mo  What’s so Funny About Peace Love and Understanding
Maybe Us ---Maybe Steve Afrogola- sent  email to him March 6   Did  I  talk with Sara S about this too?

March  26— Ginny is doing the service

Put  A Little Love in Your Heart / Love Train

#1051  We are….   ( we did this several years ago— not hard)

The hymns that day are #1031  May I Be Filled with Loving Kindness

April 2  Ed  Garbe is doing the service

There's A New World Somewhere  ( they call the promised land)

the hymns are   # 1021  Lean on Me  and #1022  Open the Window  (Let the Dove Fly In)

I'm thinking that Open the Window is a bit confusing for the Congregation to follow and maybe we need to do this as a performance piece—  and they can join in as comfortable on the chorus.

April 9   Dillman Sorrells
Transformation   no further information yet

April 16  Easter
 Alleluia    or?

2.  I am away  May  8

>>

for #1051 "We Are..." we divided somewhat into parts, with Jay and Sarah M. joining in on soprano part one octave lower. Scott J wasn't there yet at that point - I imagine Scott you can decided what part to mirror as you like. We are singing it as is altho with a toned-down piano part or possibly acapella. Also we have decided not to do the gigantic repeat in the middle section of the piece, just the little ones at the beginning and end.

rehearsal notes 1/30/17

Present:
Elaine
Scott T
Jay
Sherri
Sara S
Sarah M
Susan

We covered:
"Heart of the Mother"
Boyce "Alleluia"

Try for more fluidity when you sing HOTM.

We worked on dynamics and just kind of reviewed parts on the Alleluia.
Be careful of ritard at end. Watch the "yah!'s"

Also I forgot (tks Elaine!):
<<
Listen to the files you received for shed a little light. Please be able to,sing along with your part as you listen to your file. I want to resume working on this next week

If you need practice on the alleluia remember  there are are excellent learning tools for each part on line.  The link has been previously posted on the blog and is also on the front cover of your score.
>>

"Shed a Little Light" files are in Dropbox - you all should have received access notices via email - if you don't have a Dropbox account I believe that Sherri said she and Jay could make a CD for you.

Paula in particular: we didn't add you via Dropbox b/c we figured a CD would be easier. Please coordinate with Sherri and Jay.

Sherri and Jay please yell if you don't have time, etc....

happy new year and update

wow - quite an unplanned hiatus here on We Sing's blog.
ahem.

so - jumping right in - we are singing the "Love Train/Put a Little Love in Your Heart" mashup tomorrow.

For those who could not attend the amazing choir potluck/rehearsal last night at the Fredendalls'...

some notes:

  • we are meeting at 10am after all not 9h45
  • we have decided not to entertain the idea of doing a repeat at the end at all - too confusing plus we're the postlude so people might be wanting to get out of there,
  • only other new issue is please watch dynamics - I am at work so I cannot tell you which measures but basically we want to start significantly softer when we switch to:

    • the "put a little love" one-page repeat section (the one with the rhythm we have found challenging :)
    • and also when we start the actual "put a little love in your heart" section ("take a good look around"?)
    • also at the beginning start a bit less raucously - more cohesive

I'll try to remem to input measure numbers when I get home unless anyone wants to text them to me and I can edit this here at work - we are pretty dead today.

see y'all tomorrow!

I think this might be the first blogpost since I added Sarah M and Scott T to the bloglist so a huge WELCOME and THANK YOU  to both of you again for joining us!
