Notes from "rehearsal" 7/1 - revisited

(Sorry for the repeat email - I'm making it do the notifications again because of the orange/bolded clarification.)

The quotes are because it was more chatting and wine-ing than rehearsing but still rates a post.

In attendance were:
2 Susans
1 Elaine
honorable mention: Sara

Elaine and I apologize that neither of us got around either
  • to confirming what was on the blog last time (there indeed will be no rehearsals/services for the month of July***
  • or to spreading the word that at the last minute Sunday she and Susan and I decided it would be fun to meet at my house for wine and song Monday in lieu of normal rehearsal.

Anyway. Subsequent to the no-She-Sings-July decision we were asked to sing for Eve Stevens' service on 7/21. Long story short, what we're working on --for anyone interested and available, no pressure-- is "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)" which Josh Groban made known (see vid at bottom). Eve's service is to be --if I understand correctly, Elaine please correct/specify-- roughly kind of a big "All Will Be Well" message so we were looking for something uplifting/encourage-y.

We didn't think of simply doing "All Will Be Well" I think mostly due to lacking Heather's guitar contribution, but also we'd probably need more prep for it to sound comparable to how we did before voice-wise, too, since there are so many of us who are unable to take part these days.

Anyway I will send out an email with the pdf for the song above if you would like to access it. (Please don't tell the copyright gods - feel free to go purchase your own if you prefer at musicnotes.com in F maj.)

So far with Elaine's guidance and accompaniment Susan and I are kind of doing with it what we did with "He ain't heavy" but others are welcome to join us as long as you can come to all rehearsals between now and then. This will not be able to be a jump-in-at-the-last-minute piece and the fewer the voices the more stuck we will be arrangement-wise so if you come we will be counting on you for both rehearsals and for the service itself.

***Ergo, there is still no rehearsal in July except for this piece/service. So if you cannot make both of the next rehearsals and the service, there is indeed no She Sings stuff for you to worry about this month.

Here's the Josh Groban song:

We are doing it a good bit faster and changing the multi-voice/fadeout stuff at the end (still in progress). Verse 1 solo Clay, verse 2 solo Chandler... still working out harmonies for the refrain.

Elaine and Susan please remind me if there was something else to announce - seems like there was but it escapes me.

I guess it's movie song time

One good post deserves another... I watched "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" last night - fairly good but perhaps the best part is this song from the wondrous (as always) Glen Hansard...

Gabriella's Song

It is now that my life is mine
I’ve got this short time on earth
And my longing has brought me here
All I lacked and all I gained
And yet it’s the way that I chose
My trust was far beyond words
That has shown me a little bit
Of the heaven I’ve never found
I want to feel I’m alive
All my living days
I will live as I desire
I want to feel I’m alive
Knowing I was good enough
I have never lost who I was
I have only left it sleeping
Maybe I never had a choice
Just the will to stay alive
All I want is to be happy being who I am
To be strong and to be free
To see day arise from night
I am here and my life is only mine
And the heaven I thought was there
I’ll discover it there somewhere
I want to feel that I’ve lived my life

notes from rehearsal 6/24

Attendance: Elaine and sclay

We went thru the two pieces for Sunday (Imago Dei and May I be Filled). We figured out versions for (we think)  every combo of attendance we might be able to hope for from the group. Indeed, if no one comes but Elaine and myself, we are ready altho it would of course be better to have others with us.

Reminder for "May I be Filled"

  • if 3 or more people, progression will be -
    • verse 1 all on soprano
    • verse 2 divide between sop and alto
    • verse 3 sop and alto and tenor

  • if 2 people, progression will be -
    • verse 1 soprano
    • verse 2 alto and tenor
    • verse 3 sop and alto

Reminder for "Imago Dei"

  • if 3 or more people - one person per solo
  • if 2 people, I will solo verses 1 and 3 and Elaine will solo verse 2

We then brainstormed about possible pieces for Eve Stevens' service on 7/21:

  • #1057 turquoise hymnal "Go lifted up" (need piano and at least one voice)
  • introit "We are gathered" (need at least three voices and it has to be people who've practiced the piece)
  • #1043 "Székely áldás" (need piano and at least two voices - preferably familiar with piece)
  • #1020 "Woyaya" (need at least 3 voices, preferably familiar with piece)

Elaine will poll everyone b/c obviously we cannot do this service unless enough people are able to come rehearse at least once and on the same night and then commit to attending service that day.

Notes from rehearsal 6/17

Plans for "May I Be Filled" (turquoise hymnal #1031)

This is a change from what we talked about before since we won't have flute after all.

1st time thru - unison
2nd time thru - soprano and alto
3rd time thru - soprano, alto, and tenor

soprano: Susan Ch. (probably) and_______________
alto: Elaine and ___________________________
tenor: Susan Cl and __________________________

The "and___________'s" are dependent on how many come on 6/30 when we are to sing this.

We went thru "Imago Dei" a few times too. No change from plan posted a couple of weeks ago.

We also worked on another thing to add to the repertoire, "Be Thou With Us" turquoise hymnal #1039
This is really pretty and really short - another nice introit or benediction to have on the list.

Reminders:
We're not singing 6/23
We are singing 6/30

We're thinking about taking July off entirely - rehearsals and services, due to vacations and other conflicting plans everyone has. Will discuss further next week. If you aren't going to attend rehearsal next week and have any strong feelings about this please email Elaine.
