Notes/plans for "Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma"

Notes for "Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma" which Steve Bhaerman so kindly gave us permission to sing and print.

• Get your copy from Elaine (or she may have sent in an email, too, but I can't find it so I might be wrong) at next rehearsal.
• This will be for our auction item/evening with She Sings event on 9/28.
• Practice with Jewelsong version if you have it

We will start on G.

Sequence just like Jewelsong: 

• Chorus (all)
• Verse 1 all, unison
• "and"
• Chorus (all)
• Verse 2 Susan Ch solo
• "ohhh"
• Chorus (all)
• Verse 3 Elaine solo
• "ohhh"
• Chorus (all)
• Verse 4 Susan Cl solo
• "moo"
• Chorus (all)
• Verse 5 Sara solo
• "ahhh"
• Chorus (all)
• Verse 6 everyone - harmony
• Chorus (different this time - see below)

For word/syllable in quotes after each verse - we can decide whether everyone wants to do that word each time. Jewelsong does it all together for some verses, only one person for other verses - we need to decide.

For doot-doots during chorus and during solos we will take care that doot-doots are not clashing with each other and that the harmonies are fleshed out and balanced. Be ready to modify your doot-doots if necessary and once we've worked out what each doot-doot line needs to be for them to work together we will each have to stick to our own doot-doot tune - no harmonizing on the fly.

Chorus works like this except for last time:

• Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma
• Doot-doots
• Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma
• Doot-doots
• Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma
• Doot-doots - end/resolve one note/doot earlier than the other 2 times

Last time of chorus no doot-doots. Straight thru the line three times, 3rd time is half-chanted, all on one note, i.e.:

• Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma
• Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma
• Drive your Karma, Curb your Dogma (this time all on one note, very percussive)
• woo/wow! or sim.

Optional WOO at the end - to be confirmed.

Notes from rehearsal 10jun13

We decided we will try each rehearsal to sing again whatever piece was done for service the day before as a way to remind ourselves of any problem areas. 

As time permits, there will be blog entries for individual pieces, too, with links in the sidebar. These entries will describe as closely as possible how we did the piece (arrangement if changes, dynamics if not like written, any special repeats, wording changes, etc.). They will also be a place for a reminder of what the trouble spots were. 

I say "as time permits" assuming that it will mainly be Elaine or me, but don't forget you all are welcome to be on the blog authors list if you're not already there and if anyone on the list would like to initiate any of these song-specific (or other!) posts, that would be great. If you're not yet on the list but would like to be email me or Sherri or Elaine.

We practiced:

• Drive Your Karma, Curb Your Dogma (for the She Sings auction soirée in September)
• Breaths (1001 turquoise hymnal)
• We Are Gathered (new piece, introit, by Geo. Chave)
• Mozart Alleluia (grey hymnal #384 - for this Sunday)

and a handful of pieces, new and old, from turquoise hymnal including:

• Woyaya 1020
• Székely áldás  1043
• Comfort Me 1002

We decided these should be added to the repertoire list:

• When Our Heart is in a Holy Place 1008

• Székely áldás  1043

We are singing the Mozart Alleluia this Sunday. Rehearsal 10h per usual. Plan to sing if you know the piece and are coming to service. We are doing it as we rehearsed a few weeks ago, i.e.:

• 3 part round
• stagger entrances
• part 1 will sing the piece 3 2/3 times
• part 2 will sing 3 1/3 times
• part 3 will sing it 3 times
• In other words, stagger entrances and keep singing until Part 3 is finished with their third time. Simply finish on the line you're on at the time.

Susan Chandler will gesture for the last system and will direct slowing tempo last couple of measures.

We'll do a separate entry as described above for arrangement plans of  "Drive Your Karma, Curb Your Dogma" so stand by for that.

:( Still trying to remember what that 5-part (I think) round was that we did last fall (I think) or possibly spring '12. One person on each part, we spent the better part of an entire rehearsal getting the entrances down… Very short, we did it as introit or benediction or similar. Please yell if you remember!

Susan and Susan and I were talking bout learning Drive Your Karma Curb Your Dogma and perhpas doing it for our Soiree.  ( as  well as at UU)

So I wrote out a lyric sheet then thought I  better try and get permission before handing it out.  So far,  I have come upon this-- below-- when I googled the title.

This could be a sermon!

Drive Your Karma, Curb Your Dogma

(Swami Beyondananda's Ten Guidelines for Enlightenment)

1.  Be a fundamentalist; ensure that the fun always comes before the mental. Realize that life is a situation comedy that will never be canceled. Have a good laughsitive twice a day, which will ensure regular hilarity.

2.  Remember that each of us has been given a special gift just for entering, so you are already a winner!

3.  The most powerful tool on the planet today is Tell-A-Vision.  That is where I tell a vision to you and you tell a vision to me.  That way, if we don't like the programming we're getting, we can  change the channel.

4.  Life is like photography. You use the negative to develop.  No matter what adversity you face, be reassured: Of course God loves you. He is just not ready to make a commitment.

5.  It is true.  As we go through life thinking heavy thoughts, thought particles tend to get caught between the ears and cause a condition called truth decay.  Be sure to use mental floss twice a day, and when you're tempted to practice tantrum yoga, remember what we teach in the Swami's Absurdiveness Training Class: Don't get even, get odd.

6.  If we want world peace, we must let go of our attachments and truly live like nomads.  That  is where I no mad at you and you no mad at me. That way there will surely be nomadness on the planet.  Peace begins with each of us.  A little peace here, a little peace there.  Pretty soon all the peaces will fit together to make one big peace everywhere.

7.  I know great Earth changes have been predicted for the future, so if you're looking to avoid earthquakes my advice is simple: When you find a fault don't dwell on it.

8.  There is no need to change the world.  All we have to do is toilet train the world and we'll never have to change it again.

9.  If you're looking for the key to the Universe, I've got some good news and some bad news.  The bad news: There is no key to the Universe.  The good news: It was never locked.

10.  Finally, everything I've told you is channeled.  That way, if you don't like it, it's not my fault.  But remember enlightenment is not a bureaucracy, so you don't have to go through channels.

reorganization on blog

While I was on here deleting the WSSR links I reorganized the sidebar and moved the calendar. The Covenant and "She Sings Means..." pages that used to be in the sidebar are now at the top on individual tabs. I moved the calendar to a separate page and there is a tab at the top for that, too, so it's still easy to find. Let me know any problems, questions, if you preferred it as it was before, etc.

query

Wanted to add this piece to the repertoire but none of us last night could remember it very clearly and I don't seem to have music for it. Does anyone remember? It was a shortish piece with a 4 or 5 part round altho the different parts of the round were quite different from each other also. I remember it took us the better part of an entire rehearsal to get all the entrances right, etc. Each part is kind of a counterpoint to all the others and it was really hard at first to learn to stay on our parts and enter on time, etc. (lots of entrances were on weird beats, etc.)

Please give a shout out if you remember what this was!

Notes from rehearsal 5/27/13

We will do "May I be filled" (with flute, etc., like we figured out last week) on 6/30 plus we will perhaps do "Imago Dei."

Elaine is sending out pdf of this last  - please print and bring copies with you to rehearsal.

6/23 We are not singing as far as we know.

Reminder: Aug. 4 - Gospel according to Pooh service - piece TBA

6/16 for Mozart Alleluia here is the plan:
3x thru, stagger start, end together, so....
part 1 sing 3 2/3 times :)
part 2 sing 3 1/3 times
part 3 sing 3 times
Sherri will be in part 3 and will give us signal when Part 3 starts their last time.


We also practiced "Deep Peace" and it went really well - yay!!

We also practiced Calypso Alleluia (1036 blue hymnal)
- this will be for welcome back service in fall (date on calendar I think, otherwise TBA)
- we decided to try it as a round - start staggered, end all at once - did not necessarily decide how many times thru

We also started "In stiller nacht" by Brahms - it is bee-yew-tee-full!!!! Sherri volunteered to put it into Noteflight so easier to read the female parts - we have the SATB music so it will be good for either mix of voices... not too hard to teach to boys so we can consider it as a possible all-sing piece, or quartet, or.... the possibilities are, as they say, endless.

I am getting loopy.
